Meet Heather Werking | South Wake Raleigh Moms

Jan 14, 2019 | Meet A Mom

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?

I was born in Fayetteville, NC but lived there for just 2 years.  I’ve lived in Iowa, Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland.  In 2007, I moved to Cary, NC. Then in 2013 I moved to Apex where I reside now.

Children and Ages?

I have 2 children.  Olivia (13) and Adam (12).  They are 16 months apart.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

When I first moved to Cary, NC I knew no one and had no family in the area. My husband and I had 2 toddlers, lived in a 3rd floor apartment with 2 large dogs.  Oh the stories I could tell….  You may be surprised to know that I was desperate to meet others and drove to Clayton for a “Mother’s Unlimited” meeting and playgroup.  From that one meeting, I helped “Mother’s Unlimited” grow by starting a Cary Chapter for “Mothers Unlimited” and quickly organized a board of women that would not only help me carry out the duties of organizing and planning events for the group, but those ladies became the best support group I could have asked for.

Anyone special you’d like to thank for helping you through parenthood?

Parenthood was tough with 2 little ones being so close in age. It has gotten much easier now that the 2 are older, but I think back about how I would be holding my son breastfeeding while my daughter is asking to use the potty! Moments like those will never be forgotten…feeling like I was being pulled in lots of different directions all day, every day. Friends were my rock. Connecting with other moms who could identify with the struggles of raising little ones made my experiences seem “normal” and doable.

What is your favorite thing to do with your kids?

Now that my children are older, they are much more interested in hanging out with their friends than they are with their parents.  One thing that we always be sure to do is to sit down for dinner together.  It’s the one time of day that we can all still come together and discuss the days happenings, laugh, and connect.  We even manage to squeeze in a board game or 2 on a family game night.

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world?

A few years ago, I left the corporate world, and a Director of Sales position, to pursue my creative passion for design and décor.  Though I went to design school in 1992 right after high school, I, like many others, never actually ended up working in the field I was trained for.  In 2015, in my forties with older children and a very supportive husband, I started my own business, Werking Design & Décor.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

The residents and businesses of Apex, Cary, and Holly Springs areas catapulted my business to new heights very early-on.  Facebook and Nextdoor communities have shared my business name and services time and time again.  Moms groups share my name, and local businesses have hired me to revamp some of their commercial spaces.  Almost all of my clients have come to me on a referral basis.
